As winter break approaches, the artists in first grade are finishing up their three dimensional paper masks. Since the big idea behind the first grade art curriculum focuses on family, we thought about family pets! Not everyone has a pet, however, so we designed our masks to be a pet we have or would like to have. We also talked about why pets are important and what we love (or would love!) most about our pets.
Ms. Giroux, Ms. Fontaine, and Ms. Churan shared pictures of their beloved animals as well....

Before creating their masks, we had to learn how to transform a flat paper shape into a three dimensional object! We thought about the difference between two dimensional (2D) shapes and three dimensional (3D) shapes and how we could use the 3D paper techniques to make certain parts of our family pet mask.
For a class or two, we worked on headbands that were not only very silly looking, but also allowed excellent practice making the paper shapes into three dimensional forms we could use on our masks! Check out these silly headbands!
Many of these family pet masks are on display in the Mason Crest lobby. The variety of animals as pets, use of color, and three dimensional paper techniques really showcase the first grade artists' creative strengths!!
